ケビンのカイコ日記

1500匹

昨日、半日かかって、カイコたちを全部数えて、50匹ずつ別の箱に入れました。現在は１５００匹ぐらいいます。

その中に、皮を抜く最中カイコが多くて、何匹かを出して観察しようとしたが、なんと、出したカイコは全部死にそうです。写真を見ると、皮を完全に抜けあくて死んだやつが見られる。かわいいそう。

隣のおばちゃんは今日カイコの進み具合を見に来たので、いろいろ市と門をして、昔のカイコの飼い方についていろいろ教えてもらった。








I spent half of yesterday counting out all the silkworms, placing 50 in each box to make it easy to feed. I have somewhere around 1,500 silkworms now. As I counted them out, I found several that were in the process of shedding their skin. Unfortunatly, some of them couldn't escape their old skin, and ended up dying. Now I have 1,498.

This morning the neighbor lady stopped by to check on how the silkworms are growing. We took the opportunity to ask lots of questions about how to grow them and how they did it in "the old days". A great morning it was.

桑の世界

最近、桑の葉っぱ探しが忙しくて、カイコを毎日計るのができなくて、あっという間に大きくなりました！しかし小さいのもいる。

今日の桑の葉を撮ると、いろいろな面白いものがついていました。もちろん、その一つは桑の実。最近食べられるように紫になっているのでカイコのためだけではなく、私の食事にもなる。

The silkworms are getting larger. Unfortunatly, I have been too busy collecting leaves for them to eat (three times a day!) that I have not had time to measure them. As I was collecting leaves today, I found some interesting creatures sharing the leaves. Of course, the most obvious things on the tree are the berries. As they start to turn a deep purple, I am reluctant to pick banches because I want to come back and harvest them for jam.





葉にこのような面白い虫もついていた。桑に実に似ていると思わない？それが隠れる戦略のかな。

This interesting cluster of bugs looks like a Mulberry to me. I wonder if that is part of their camoflage strategy...




この変なクモの名前はまだ不明です。

Anone know what this spider is called?




一番気持ち悪いのはこの小さくて白い虫。最近多いのでついてない葉を見つかるとうれしい。
The biggest problem I have now is that these fuzzy white bugs are all over most of the trees. I don't want to put them in with the silkworms, so I feel increasingly lucky to find leaves without their tell-tale white threads.

アリ！！！

昨日、 ちょうど村の人とこの村に住みたい人と一緒に田植えに行こうと思ったら、カイコ達が激しく踊っているのを気づいた。よく見ると、ありに襲われていた！ありを一匹ずつ取ったが、助けられないカイコもいました。

カイコって甘いのかな。。。

Yesterday I was just about to leave for some rice-planting with the local office and a group of people interested in moving to the country, when I noticed my silk worms doing a crazy new dance. Closer inspection revealed that they were being attacked by ants! I was able to quarantine the "infected" bunch, and proceeded to pick the ants off one by one while the silk worms squirmed in apparent agony. I rescued most of them, but some had already given up the fight by the time I was able to pick the ants off.

26日目

こいつは覚えてますか？　でかくなりました！しかし、シャーレに入ってないカイコは成長が遅い。人口密度が高いからかな？

大きいほうはお尻に角ができました。しかし、触っても痛くない :)。　カイコの色がちょっと黄色ぽくなりました。黄色い絹を作るのかな？

桑の葉は今まで小さい桑の薮からとっていましたが、やっと桑の木を見つけました。実がなったら絶対に収穫に行きます！次の栄村の山菜祭りで売れるかもしれない。(今回は竹の子やフジノキの花をたくさん売れました。)




今日のカイコ観察レポート：

成長期：2ｃｍ
部屋の温度：計りませんでしたが、今日は雨の日なので以外と涼しかった。
体長：約3cm
体重：計れるようになったかもしれない。
気がついたこと：

24日目

最近、田植えや仕事で忙しいのでカイコのよい写真をとる時間がなかなか見つかれない。

しかし、カイコ達はさすがに休まない。デッカイー！！！

シャーレの中で育ているカイコは1.5cmを超えて、計る時にピンセットで出されるのを嫌がるようになりました。やっぱり、思春期だな。

普通のカイコの箱にはまだ大勢いる。そちらはまだ 0.5cm　ちょっと。でも、ケコの成長期を抜けて、ちゃんとしたカイコになりました。

食欲はすごい！毎日の桑葉の量は急に増えて、私の知っているところは足りないだろう。近所にはいくつかの場所があるが、私は山でジョギングする時にもいつも探している。何ヵ所をみつけったが、まだ足りないような気がする。

今度、写真を見せます！

So, I have not been keeping up with this Silk Worm blog as much as I would have liked. Been a bit busy with rice planting, and work.

The silkworms, however, are not taking a break. They are getting bigger and bigger. Especially those in kept in the observation dish are now 1.5 cm. The rest, kept together in a box as a group of several hundred, are still between 0.5 and 1cm. They have, however, escaped from their "hairy stage." In Japanese, this is called "keko" - sounds like "kaiko", which means silkworm, but "ke" means hair. All the newly hatched babies are nice and fuzzy.

Their appetite is amazing. There are several places in the neighborhood to collect mulberry leaves, but not enough to keep up at this pace. I have found several more places in the mountains where I jog, but still, not enough for this many silk-worms.

Next time I hope to have some photos.
