人間みたい

今日はカイコたちをテストしようと思いました。

今まで、毎朝新しい、新鮮な桑の葉を取りにいくのだが、カイコの箱には古い葉っぱがたまり続く。新しい葉っぱをあげても、なかなか古い葉っぱから話さない。まああーまだおいしいかもしれあないが、新鮮なのを食べたほうがいいんじゃない？フレッシュな葉っぱは違うところにおいても見つかるのかな？

今朝、新鮮な葉っぱをちょっとした距離において、観察jしました。カイコ達は新鮮な葉っぱはどこにあるのかわかるのか？

いいえ、わかりません。まああ、古い葉っぱはまだおいしいかもしれません。それで新しい葉っぱに興味ないかも。一時間後、私はあきらめて、一匹を葉っぱに置きました。この一匹は仲間を呼ぶのかな？よばない。自分ひとりで新鮮の葉っぱを楽しんでいた。いやなやつだなー。

写真ではさまざまな葉っぱのサイズが置いてあるのがわかる。これはもう一つの実験です。若い葉っぱが好きなのか、大きい葉っぱが好きなのかを知りたかった。

今日のカイコ観察レポート：

成長期：
部屋の温度：13.5 - 14度
体長：約5mm (シャーレの中で育ているやつ。一般のカイコはまだ３ｍｍぐらい。シャーレのなかのほうが暖かいのかな？)
体重：計ることできないほど軽い
気がついたこと：

新鮮なえさを近くにおいても、古い、枯れた葉っぱのほうが好き。それとも、一番安全なのはそのままの場所にいて、古いのを食べ続けて、新鮮な葉っぱの香りに気づいても現在の安定した状態を捨てて、挑戦するのが怖い。やっぱり、カイコと人間は似ているかもしれません。



So, what I have learned today is that silk worms and humans may have some things in comon. Until now, I have been putting in new mulberry leaves each day, but never have a chance to remove the old ones because there are always twenty or so litle worms still chomping on them. Today I made a test. I tried placing the fresh leaves a few centimeters away from the worms (and the old leaves). after a few hours none of the worms even realized that there were fresh leaves. (I also placed leaves of different sizes to see which the worms prefered.)) I then tried placing one lucky worm on the fresh leaf to see if he would call the others. Nothing.

I begin to wonder if they may have smelled the new leaves but, similar to us humans, decided it was much "safer" to stay with the comfortable (though dying) leaf they had at the moment. Maybe silk worms and humans are not that different.
